Final Opening Sequence:

Planning and research:

Elyasse’s pitch:

A young girl laying cross the floor in an empty mental hospital/prison, as the water drips down from the ceiling and hits the floor it turns into blood. The next scene is a family driving into their new house and the young is part of the family.

Shianne Curtis-Gayle:

My pitch was of a girl who had psychological issues. She could hear voices but could not see the people and had a strong feeling she was being followed. She kept finding scratch marks on her arms and back, convinced its someone else’s doing she turns paranoid. So she starts going crazy trying to run away from herself and the “monster”.

Deimante Sidlauskaite:

My pitch was a romance movie that includes 2 main characters a girl and a boy. they were dating at the age of 17 and 18 planning their futures and stating their ideas of how to get there. After a while we see them separated living their dreams. We experience that their not together however even at the age of 25 they still remember each other. It all ends that they accidentally meet and remember the early days spent together and fall in love once again. This leads them living happily ever after.

Erika guzman:

My pitch is based on a guy his pregnant girlfriend and haunted ex. the clip would initiate with a guy who finds out his girlfriend is pregnant and panics so he kills her. years later he has a new girlfriend and she finds out she’s pregnant so they move in to a new house. when they move in thats when the guys ex starts haunting them.

Meltem Ozmen:

My pitch is based around the idea of a psychological thriller within this there is a girl as the main character who experiences psychological breakdowns and unease throughout the video. She feels paranoid when entering large groups of people and believes that they are all talking about her. She is convinced that there are supernatural beings playing a game with her and are following her wherever she goes.

The final pitch we chose:

Our opening sequence will be going by the genre of horror as it was highly favoured and as a group agreed that it would be the best way to include many technical aspects. We decided to go with the storyline that there is a supernatural being (ghost) haunting a particular house, whenever someone new moves into the house this ghost haunts them too, it’s like an on-going cycle of victims. We incorporated Elyasse’s idea of a girl in a mental institution by putting the ghost’s first victim in a mental institution as she has gone crazy due to her unnatural experiences in the house. We also used his idea of a new family moving into the house however instead of a family we will use just a girl who will play the next victim of the ghost. We will also use Shianne’s idea of scratch marks on our initial victim’s wrists in order to show how stressed and mentally unstable she is.

Shianne: Opening sequence analysis:

 The women in black

Sound

How is dialog used to create ideas about  key characters ?: There is a good use of sound in this opening sequence to help build suspense. There is no dialog whilst the little girls are playing but after they jump there is one blood-curling scream from a female character, which screams “my babies”. This shows that there is a strong attachment between the voice and the children. This also shows that the children will be greatly missed  and insinuates that there is a specific reason that  these characters were chosen .

How is dialog  and sound used to create ideas about key locations  and characters ? : The dialog at the end of the first scene has a scream; the female voice has a British accent, which suggest the film is set in England. The music played throughout was slowly paced which an eerie feel which followed suit with genre of the film .There is a piece of slow music played throughout the scene, which is very much like the music from the British Gothic period ballerina jewelry box.

How are sounds used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film?: The mood is very somber and serious this is shown through the use of no dialog but instead heavy ambient sound.

Mise-en-scene

How is made clear by mise-en-scene where the film is set ?: It is made clear where the movie is set from the dolls because of the dresses and the painted features.   The tea set also typically British even down to the concept of tea parties. Moreover the outfits worn by the young girls and the ribbons in their hair is the type which were worn by young girls in Britain.

How is the time period of the film made clear?: The period is clear from  the room in which the film is set along with props. The high windows and the high ceiling which have beams and the basin featured  behind the girls  in the scene. The other props such as the old pram and the brush used on the dolls hair.

How are ideas about the main character established ?: The idea of the main character is made clear for the use of control they have without being seen, but still making the three children jump out of the window without argument. This  also portrays the main character appear horrible and predatory for picking on the weakest and most venerable characters.

How are the genre and general mood established?: The genre and general mood of the movie are established through the use  of characters movements. The characters moved slowly and their actions towards the end are slow and deliberate ;it is almost like they are being controlled by a greater force. The mood is very somber and serious this is shown through the use of no dialog but instead heavy ambient sound.

Camera shots

How are the key locations introduced ?: The main location is presented through the use of close ups on objects around the room in which the scene is set.

The characters introduced? : This is followed by a wide shot of all of the characters which introduces the three little girls who are the main characters in the scene .

How relationships between key characters are established ?: The close ups and wide shots show good interactions happening between the three little girls as they play with tea set and their dolls.Theses camera angles present the three key characters having a good time ,getting along and having a strong and healthy relationship with one another.

How are the narrative and genres established ?: The wide camera shot at the end of the opening scene which shows the girls looking to be controlled gives clear indication to the genre of the film and the  narrative.

Wolf creek

Sound

How is dialog used to create ideas about  key characters ?: In the opening dialog is used to make one of the key characters seem more responsible  while the male character and the blonde female seem more laid back and relaxed.

How is dialog  and sound used to create ideas about key locations  and characters ?: The sound of the waves crashing against the sand and gives the audience a clear indication that the key location  is by the sea  and on the coast. Sound does not help establish the films genre in the opening scene. The only sound is the carefree and easy dialog exchanged between characters.

How are sounds used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film?: Although it is not obvious the dialog and actions of characters is all to happy and there is a no way that it could go on for the whole film which narrows down the genres that the film may be.Sound in the opening  scene makes the film seem calm and relaxed as the sound is light and of a medium pace.

Mise-en-scene

How is made clear by mise-en-scene where the film is set ?: It is clear where is film is set because of the accents of the main characters and the smaller characters .If only the main characters had accents then it could be said that it was not filmed in Australia. However because  all characters  in the scene have Australian accents it is easy to say and place where the movie was filmed.during the scene where the girls are writing the postcards there is a red letter box shown behind them which identifies it as an Australian postbox.

How is the time period of the film made clear?: The time period of the film is made clear by the cars in the show room and the fashion in the style  the characters are wearing. The car looks  outdated and is being sold at a cheaper price meaning that it has lost value because it is old . This tells the audience that in the time period this  film was set the car was old . The key location was introduced using a wide shot showing a wide expanse on the sand and sea.

Camera shots

How are camera shots used to create ideas about key locations ?:

The key location was introduced using a establishing wide shot showing a wide expanse on the sand and sea. This informed the viewer that the clip was based upon the beach shown.

How are ideas about the main character established ?: The main characters were introduced using a variety  of close ups and wide shots. These wide shots are used mainly while the two women sit on the beach and also while they  write post cards , on the male character when he is buying the car or when all characters are in shot together preparing for their trip .The rule of thirds is used in many of the partying scenes to draw the audiences attention to male character being the most uncomfortable .

How are the genre and general mood established?: The relationships between key characters through dialog and actions towards each other. The way the characters converse and  act towards each other is friendly  and light. There are various long ,close up and  and The two female characters seem to know each other very well easily taking about how the male character feels about them and about their trip.

How relationships between key characters are established ?: The way the characters converse and  act towards each other is friendly  and light this is shown through the quick cross cuts of two person shots throughout their conversation .Although the females seem a little dubious to whether the male character is not completely honest with them on the matter of having a girlfriend the camera shots used t show this are the wide shots and the close ups of the uncertainty shown on their faces . This shows that they may not know him as well as they know one and other.

How are the narrative and genres established ?: The narrative is made clear as the characters prepare for the trip  in the long and wide shots and panning shots between the key characters .They also talk about how they are travelling and how long for. However not all narrative is shown as there will be more happening than what is given away . This is shown from a point of view shot which uses the camera to act as the protagonist, as someone watches the car through  hole in a sign post where the sign is used in a framing shot. The tracking shot at the end of the clip which gives the illusion that they are driving into a lot more.

Jaws

Sound

How is dialog used to create ideas about key characters ?:

The female character at the beginning seems to be reckless and only seems to think bout having a good time as she tells the male she is with that shes going swimming. However the male seems a lot more guarded by asking the questions such as “where are we going?”however he is also more heavily influenced wanting to follow his half naked companion into the water. Moreover the male companion is also drunk as he talks about “not being drunk” and talking to himself about how he cant even undress himself.

How is dialog and sound used to create ideas about key locations and characters ?:

The dialog which is also used by the actors also makes it clear that they do not know each other or have only just met, as he asks the female her name .The actors voices are carefree and the activities which are spoken about are activities more commonly associated with teenagers. They talk about swimming at night and drinking on the beach.
There is asynchronous  Sound of the girl jumping into the water and also swimming around in it gives of the clear impression that they are in the sea.It is also made clear in the shot when the boy falls to the ground and the only sound which is heard is a thud suggesting that  he fell on sand.

How are sounds used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film?:

The synchronous sounds from the guitar in the back ground as they are both running gives the seen a calm and fun feeling as they run towards the beach. The music also gives a feeling of the relaxed night they have had before.

Once they run away from the music the soft laughter of the female continues adding the carefree atmosphere which was previously created by the guitar.
The diagetic sound of the bell in the water breaks the calm sound of the waves and gives off the feeling of a warning of what is to come.
The non diagetic sound of the eerie music playing after the girls asks the boy to join her adds to the feeling of suspense which has been building .
This music then builds in tempo and bass and the drums begin to be played this gives the sense of impending doom for what shall come next. seconds after this there is chilling high note and the give begins to be pulled under. As the girls begins screaming that it hurts and disappears  under the surface of the water. This makes the mood somber heavy.

Mise-en-scene

How is made clear by mise-en-scene where the film is set ?:

The location of the film  is made clear by the  beach fence and the shoreline behind it.

The actors accents also give away the location of the film as both their accents are american and the are on the beach which would lead us to believe are in the coast of america.

How is the time period of the film made clear?:

The time period is made clear by the way the actors talk , the dialog used is very modern compared to if they were speaking in old English.

The fact that they are teenagers  running off to skinny dip says it is modern as that would not have happened  in older time periods.

Lastly the clothes which are being worn  suggest it is a recent time period as  the girl is wearing jeans which would not have happened   in a older time period.

Camera shot

How are camera shots used to create ideas about key locations ?:

There are several  wide shots which show the pair of teenagers running and there is a large expanse  on the beach fence shown behind the pair.Later there long shots are used to show the  male and female separately on the beach.the panning shot also helped t o keep up with the fast of the scene.

How are ideas about the main character established ?:

The varying long and mid shots continually   only show the girl separately  having fun giving off the idea that this is all that she does  . The girl is perceived to be unknowing or uncaring about other people as the drunken boy is not taken care of while drunk and just left to fend for himself.

How relationships between key characters are established ?:

The long shot shows  a lot space between the actors  creating the assumption that they do not know each other well as she does not wait for the boy to catch up in his drunken state. The varying long and mid shots continually  show the pair separately, adding to the assumption that they did not know each other prior as the drunken by is not taken care of while drunk and just left to fend for himself.

How is the  genre established ?:

The genre is established  through the use of stereotypical carefree young teenagers in an unknowing situation which takes a turn for the worse. This is a common story line for horrors and the darkly lit quick cuts keep the fast pace moving while still building suspense of the ambiguous situation .

Deimante:Opening sequence analysis:

The ring:

Camera shots Key locations are introduces through the following:

  • Medium two shot (we’re introduces to a bedroom where we see a bed and two girls charting)
  • Long shot (corridor)

Key characters are introduced through the following:

  • Close up (two girls are having a sleepover)
  • Medium two shot

Relationships between key characters are established using the following shots:

  • Close up
  • Over the shoulder shot
  • Point of view shot

They all reveal two teenage students sharing stories on a sleepover; this leads to the fact that they are definitely close and know each other for a long time. The films genre is established using the following:

  • Close up (story being told)
  • Wide shot (the TV turns on)
  • Master shot (fridge opens up)

The films narrative is established using the following:

  • Close up
  • Long shot
  • Wide angle shot
  • Close upThe narrative is indicated to include some sort of paranormal activity that leads to death. At first we hear a story about a tape that seems to curse people and they die in a week due to a phone call. Later we experience a long shot in which the phone rings. Wide angle shot includes the TV turning on by itself. Further more, the close up leads to the girl opening the door and getting killed in some kind of paranormal way. Therefore the narrative includes a tape from which people get cursed and killed after they watch it.

Editing in the sequence using the following:

  • Eye line match  (when the girls are talking)
  • Transitions used: wipe, fade in (when phone rings),
  • Extremely fast pacing included: wipe, fade out, wipe and fade in to a close up. (combined together to introduce us to a quick horror scene of the girl being affected by paranormal activity.)
  • Match on action (when the girl opened the door at the end)
  • Varieties of paces have been used to cause terror and fear when the horror scene is taking place. It was fast at the beginning however the pace decreased if there was something spooky talked about or happening.

The use of sound focusing on the following: Dialogue used to create ideas about the films key characters:

  • ‘You was with Josh all weekend?’

This introduces us to a character that is unseen however will get affecter later on due to him watching the tape as well. Sound used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film:

  • Ambient sound (includes rain at the background) this creates a mysterious and spooky feeling because a scary story is also being told at the same lime.
  • Non-diagetic (windy sound when the paranormal activities take place) this creates a feeling of fear and frightens the viewer.

The films genre is established using the following sounds:

  • Synchronous sound (wind at the background) creates tension and a feeling of mystery this leads to fear and the genre being horror.
  • Diagetic sound (empty tape sound) in a silent environment that type of sound creates fear which leads to horror genre.
  • Whispering a scary story leads the viewer to concentrate on everything that is being said it also gives them a feeling of nervousness as they don’t know what may happen next.

Use of mise-en-scene focusing on the following: Setting of the film:

  • Costumes (school uniforms)  indicate that the film is set in America.
  •  The design of the house is also an indication of American type of stereotypical house.
  • Props such as: phone on a wall in the kitchen, is another example of an American house.

Time period of the film:

  • 19th century, we seen to involve a phone (prop) that is not mobile. The girl doesn’t have a smart phone like we all do now.
  • They also said that they wanted to record a football game on tape. Nowadays you can just press record rather than copy it on a tape.

Ideas established about the main characters:

  • Costumes (school uniforms) indicate that the movie is going to include students.

Genre of the film is established:

  • By using props such as: tape and TV. We are led to an understanding that is is a horror movie due to the fact that paranormal activity takes place at the end of the sequence and the girl is killed all because she watched a tape.
  • Lighting used is dark. This causes a feeling of fear and nervousness which leads to a conclusion that the genre is horror.

The last exorcism 2:   http://www.movieweb.com/movie/the-last-exorcism-part-ii/opening-scene  (the video cannot be found on youtube anymore however, I found a link in which you can still view the opening sequence and I have included screen shots). Camera shots Key locations are introduces through the following:

  • Wide shot/master shot (we see a house outside)
  • Then a wide shot of the house inside (indicates that action will be taking place inside)
    wide shot (house_editedkitchen ( props) mise-en-scene_edited

Key characters are introduced through the following: Relationships between key characters are established using the following shots:

  • Two medium shot (we see a couple laying/sleeping, this indicates that they are married or live together.)
  • Close up (someone gets in the bed while the woman is in the bathroom). The man jumps out when he realises its someone else and this leads to an understanding that one relationship  is all about love and care however the other may be harmful and hurt you.some one gets in the bed_edited
This image is a screen shot of someone getting in the bed. Was seen in the background.

The films genre is established using the following:

  • Close up – we see a dead  bunny at the very beginning before we      are taken to the inside of the house. This immediately is a representation of death and harmfulness therefore the genre is horror.
  •   Another close up takes place when we see a scratch. This leads to an indication of danger and alarming pain as he is scratched badly. Also is a representation of horror.
  • Wide shot (messy kitchen) this is a representation of danger and someone harmful therefore leads to a conclusion that the movie is horror.
dead bunny_edited a screen shot from the video with the dead bunny.
scratch on the leg close up of the scratch.

The films narrative is established using the following:

  • All the shots above and the action in      those shots indicate that the movie is going to be about a girl haunting      or trying to hurt others as well as herself.

Editing in the sequence using the following:

  • Match on action (when the man opens      the door)
  • Transitions: fade out (when the door      opens)
  • Wipe (to introduce us to the setting of the scene and where the action is about to take place)
  • It starts with slow pacing to cause nervousness and mysterious feeling about what will happen next. However,      pacing increases and becomes faster when the dangerous character is introduced.  The pacing around the      couples seems to be slow, may be to indicate the fear that they feel as well as to cause fear and alarming nervousness for the viewers of the   movie.

The use of sound focusing on the following: Dialogue used to create ideas about the films key characters:

  • ‘Jesus you’re freezing’ this is an      indication that they live together and he knows when his girlfriend/wife      is cold and not. However, we know that his wife is in the bathroom      therefore a third character is introduces at the same time.

Genre of the film is established using the following sounds:

  • Non-diegetic sound (at the very      beginning to introduce us to the setting of the sequence) the music is      very slow and creates a feeling of fear already. When the music is playing      we see a dead bunny which leads us to a disaster behind the corner.
  • Synchronous sound (used throughout the      sequence) it causes a feeling of fear and nervousness gets louder as      something scary is about to happen so the level of fear increases as well.      Leads to an understanding that the genre is horror.

Sound used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film: * Non-diegetic sound- created tension and left the setting looking and feeling spooky, all this led to feeling scared and experiencing fear. Use of mise-en-scene focusing on the following: Time period of the film:

  • The design of the house from the outside looks like it has been set in America.
  • Time period may be 21st century due to the technologies and props they have in the kitchen. As well as furniture design and the pronunciation when they speak.

Ideas established about the main characters:

  • costume used on the scary girl causes a feeling of fear and danger since she is covered all in blood (make-up)

Genre of the film is established through the following: HORROR

  • Make up- scratch on the leg.
  • Lighting- dull which creates a spooky  feeling towards the atmosphere.
  • Costume- Night dress covered in blood.
  • Movement- slow when the scary  character is unseen which creates tension and a feeling of suspense. films genre_edited (girl)

The woman in black:

Camera shots Key locations are introduces through the following:

  • Close up zooming out to a master shot. (we see toys and a play room/ their bedroom)
  • Wide shot (the room is introduced)

Key characters are introduced through the following:

  • Close up (we see children’s hands feeding the dolls).
  • Wide angle shot (zooms out to show us  the 3 girls playing).
  • Low angle shot (we’re introduced to  another character that is unseen and looking at the girls as they turn to      look at someone).

Relationships between key characters are established using the following shots:

  • Wide angle shot (playing with the dolls/ sharing toys) indicates that they are friends/sisters.
  • Close up over the shoulder shot (we  see the woman wearing black and she seen the girls jump out the window.      This indicates that she is evil and the main source to the horrors that are going to happen in the movie.)
  • Low angle shot & point of view shot (the girls look up and look at the window. This leads to an      understanding that the woman made them jump just by looking at the girls.

The films genre is established using the following:

  • Point of view shot we see the girls playing from someone else’s view (the character is unseen). This leads the      girls to look one direction with a change of facial expression. We can  gain an idea that the genre is going to be horror since the atmosphere  changes and the girls look like they have been manipulated by one look. The mood seems to change and they are led to look at the window, this  indicates an accident that is about to happen.

The films narrative is established using the following :

  • Close up
  • Wide shot
  • Low angle shot
  • Point of view shot
  • Mid shot
  • Rule of thirds

The shots combined lead to a narrative that the movie is about kids being cursed and forced to kill them selves in many different ways, just by a look of a woman. At the end we see over the shoulder shot where a head with a black hat is shown, it is obvious that a woman was there to cause the kids to jump. Editing used in the sequence using the following:

  • Eye line match (girls looking towards the window & the woman looking at the girls)
  • Fade out ( This leads to experience the state of the room after the incident as well as the woman)
  • Dissolve (After girls jump. May be to create the idea that the one to cause this has disappeared with the fading      itself.)
  • Edit pacing- slow (this created      tension for the audience watching)

The use of sound focusing on the following: Dialogue used to create ideas about the films key characters:

  • No dialogue

Sounds used to create ideas about key locations:

  • Non -diegetic sound
  • Synchronous sound

Sounds used to establish ideas about the films genre:

  • synchronous sound

Sound used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film:

  • Non-diegetic sound
  • Sound motif- repeated sound

There was no dialogue taking place, only non-diagetic sound in the background which created a mysterious feeling about the action taking place in the scene. The background music was almost like a music box playing non stop. It was slow however got louder as an intimate action was taking place (the girls walking towards the window). This may lead the viewers to gain a frightening felling about the action taking place which leads to a conclusion that the genre of the movie is horror. The general mood is also influenced by the non stop music in the background, it leads to a mysterious/ terrifying feeling when all you hear is creepy music and see girls looking as if they’ve been cursed. Use of mise-en-scene focusing on the following: Time period of the film:

  • It is made clear that the film is set  in Victorian days due to the design and props used inside the house      (buggy, iron, furniture).
  • The costumes used also indicate that  the movie is set in older days. Girls are wearing long puffy dresses. Toys and their way of playing is also an indication that the time being is early Victorian days (dolls made of clay)
  • Black hat that goes over the woman’s face. (ladies wore them in Victorian days)

Ideas established about the main characters:

  • Kids ( they used props like toys where they shared them and passed them around to one another which indicates that the girls are friendly)
  • Unseen woman wearing black which   indicates evil and death.

Genre of the film is established:

  • Through dull lightning. (makes the sequence appear spooky leads to the conclusion that it is horror.)
  • Horrific incident happened in less than 5 minutes into the movie.

Key features that an audience would expect in a film of that genre:

  • To frighten
  • To cause panic
  • Cause of dread and alarm
  • To invoke our worst hidden fears
  • Centre on the dark side of life
  •  Deal with our nightmares, vulnerability,      our terror of unknown, our fear of death.

I would use these key features to create my own opening sequence in many ways. For example, to frighten we have planned to cause tension and alarming disruption when the couple moves to a new house by involving an unseen character that seems to appear in a mirror. We’ll cause panic by leaving it as a mystery for the audience to figure out who the unseen character/ shadow is and why he is there.

Meltem: opening sequence analysis

Insidious is a horror film and was released on April 1st 2011 and is about a normal middle-class American family who have moved house but soon find out that their son Dalton is possessed by the devil. The opening sequence for this film lasts 3 minutes and 51 seconds which is an adequate amount of time for the audience to work out what the film is about and to get to know the setting but not so much the characters in this case. The opening sequence does really well to establish genre through many devices. These include the typography of the titles being in a gothic style as well as being coloured red to signify blood, violence and horror. In addition to this, the non-diegetic sound in the form of background music provides an eerie feeling and thriller like atmosphere. Next, only two characters of the many characters are shown in the opening sequence to possibly to keep it simple yet effective but also to emphasise the scare and horror factor involved. The first of the two characters shown is the haunted child ‘Dalton Lambert’,  played by Ty Simpkins and also the rather scary elderly woman with dark make up holding a candle to make out the bold and obvious lines of her face. This really does create a scary atmosphere and keeps the viewer wanting to watch on. I would say that the age range for this film is people aged 16 or over because it is of a horrific nature which may clearly me traumatic or too much for somebody younger than sixteen to handle. None the less, the opening is very exciting and keeps the audience filled with anticipation. Mise-en-scene incorporates many factors such as lighting, props, make up, costumes and setting. The director has evidently done a really good job on this as he has made all of these factors come across in a horror and scary like manner which fulfils the objective of the opening sequence for this film. Firstly, the lighting in the opening sequence gives the audience a feel of fright as it is mainly black and white to emphasise the characters, setting and the resemblance to homes in general. Secondly, the setting is in a large family home and the opening titles are a set of photos of scary sections of the house which have been rotated to look creepy and frightening. For example: This screenshot highlights the black and white effect and the lighting on an old grandfather clock which can be perceived to be a typical scene within a scary film. However, this scene works very well with this film as later in the film, it is used a multitude of times to refresh the audiences minds as to where that scene had been seen before. The pace does gradually increase as the music gets louder and faster. The camera work in the form of turning and direction gets quicker as the music gets faster and more intense. This screenshot shows the lighting using simple objects such as a candle to show one of the characters in a frightening situation. Tears This particular opening sequence consists of many edited features to amplify the horror factors for the audience. The opening frames within the sequence display the general conventions of films, with opening credits. The first camera frame from the actual film is a vertical rope which connotates the rope has significance within the film which creates an enigma within the opening seconds. The non-diegetic sound of birds tweeting creates a positive mood however also seeming to create a sinister underlying meaning. We are introduced to a girl swinging in what appears to be a deserted forest, this instantly creates a mysterious mood as the innocence of the young girl is overshadowed by the medium shot taken behind a tree, this implies she is not alone however through the mise-en-scene in that we are led to believe the opposite, that she is alone. This is something I hope to incorporate within my own film as it entices the viewer to go and see the film. The sequence then shows a shot of the girl’s feet which is interesting in that it creates and anonymity to the girl, also an actual shot of her feet swinging is unusual and creates another enigma for the audience. This seems like a unique show and consists with the shot of the rope in that they both seem significant however random in the same instance. The shot then returns to a close up of the rope which now is apparent to be important, however as an audience you’re still oblivious to its meaning which again enhances and emphasises the initial enigma created by the random shot of the rope. Surprisingly we are also re-introduced to the ‘behind the tree’ shot, however different to the rope shot the actual camera pans slowly confirming the young girl isn’t alone, this immediately creates an intense surge of fear. The acting of the girl (mise-en-scene) implies that she isn’t aware of her company allowing the audience to emphasise with her. In the next shot we are brought back to the rope however the shot is followed up by the dead corpse singing next to the little girl this is when the main cliff hanger drops, the non-diegetic sound is short and sharp fuelling the fear and adding to the overall impact of the revealed corpse. Halloween (1978) In regard to conventions Halloween both subvert sand upholds them with the main shock being the child killer who are usually portrayed as sweet and innocent, and are more usually the victim as opposed to the antagonist. However, apart from this conventions are upheld which makes the scene one of the most effective and shocking openings of the time. The camera angles and movements in the opening sequence are one of the most effective devices used due to the famous point of view shot of the killer. It gives a true essence of someone being watched which no other shot could do, and the slow camera movement truly builds suspense as the killer gets closer and closer to the victim. Furthermore it also gives an eerie feel to the scene, as we see the story unfold as we find out the killer knows his way around the house. An effective part is when the killer reaches into the draw and pulls out a knife, the use of this convention which has connotations with blood and death makes the viewer feel further on edge as not only do we now see the killer is familiar with his surroundings but he also intends to kill. The use of sound in the opening scene also enhances the genre of the film. At the very beginning a distant crow can be heard in the background, followed by crickets and the silence proceeds until we hear the girl talking to her boyfriend. The fact that we can hear the crickets emphasises that there is nobody around and the crow has clear connotations with nature and therefore implies the house is isolated – further shown by the silence. These regular conventions in horror make the girl seem extremely vulnerable as she is completely oblivious regarding the danger that surrounds her at this point. Lighting is also used to build tension. An obvious and essential convention of horror is the use of darkness especially to enhance the view of Halloween, as we see Michael stalking his victim in the darkness outside the safety and light of the house. It is symbolic of the danger that he holds and the fact that the safety of the house has not been infiltrated. However, as the girl makes her way upstairs she begins to turn lights off until she turns the final light off which is heightened by incidental music. As this happens the pace immediately picks up which shows that the light was symbolic of the safety of the house which has now been penetrated – she’s now in true danger. As the boyfriend leaves he comes out of the darkness and into the light which shows that he has escaped yet she is still left upstairs in the dark, not only this but further shows that the girl is now alone which makes her all the more vulnerable. The setting of the house also adds to the fear as it is meant to be a place of safety for an individual and the isolation of this particular house further heightens that. Despite this mise-en-scene seems to play a relatively minor part, apart from the dagger, as the main features are the camera angles and lighting. Editing is also kept to a minimum if not non-existent as it adds to the realism and the point of view shot means it is not needed. To conclude it seems to the audience the conventions are followed throughout Halloween and this makes the opening effective. The use of lighting and camera angles are the main features in the opening as the darkness and camera angles heightens the suspense as we do not see the killer until the final moment after he has done the deed.

The characters are established as lovers which can not be with each other because in the 1960s having a relationship was looked down up on, this may suggest that something may go wrong between them, this presents the films genre as a romantic film, but due to the eerie music and the aerial, wide camera shots may also indicate that this film is a horror.   Elyasse’s analysis of the sound in the horror/thriller film Psycho:Analyse the opening sequence in your film in order to establish how it has made use of sound focusing on the following: How is dialogue used to create ideas about the films key characters? Focus Group Questions:

1.     What music creates the feeling of suspense?
2.     What do you expect in a horror movie ?
3.     Do you think the opening sequence and the scenes in it, were good representations of horror movies?
4.     Do you think the actors were well suited for the movie?
5.     Is the location appropriate for the genre of the movie?
Findings: All together we had 11 people that answered the focus group questions (shown above).

Summary of answers received for each question:

What music creates the feeling of suspense? When summing up the answers focusing on feelings of suspense created by music people are usually affected when the sounds are mainly slow, creepy, music that uses high notes as well as instrumental music. Also, music that slowly increases its volume and becomes louder (this suggests an action that is about to take place). We also had a thought of children’s music (childhood songs e.g. ring a ring a roses).

What do you expect in a horror movie ? When people were asked about their expectations in a horror movie we found out that people expect: * Paranormal scenes (objects moving, ghosts) * Someone being haunted *Evil/psychologically disturbed characters * Dull atmosphere/ dark locations * Mythical creature that creates problems *  Blood and violence * Creepy music.

Do you think the opening sequence and the scenes in it, were good representations of horror movies? The third question focused on the opening sequences that was shown to the participants answering the questionnaire. Their ideas about a good representation of the horror movie regards the scenes shown were positive due to a feeling of suspense as well as the music making the viewer feel uncomfortable. They stated that the atmosphere was dark and therefore it created fear. Some found it interesting due to the color red being used which automatically brings blood and violence to our heads and therefore creates fear. The phase of filming also represented the movie as horror due to slow motion filming mixed with loud creepy music in the background.

Do you think the actors were well suited for the movie? When asked about actors and their suitability for the movie, majority agreed that they are suited as far as they have experienced the opening sequence. Participants stated that the woman with the candle was creepy, scary and looked psychopathic. This was caused due to the make-up and costume being used. She was presented pale and the look on her made viewers feel uncomfortable, which mostly is the case in horror movies. The boy was also recognized and stated that he is the innocent one in this movie which will be affected by the evil presence. Therefore the actors that we saw are definitely suited by the feedback that we got.

Is the location appropriate for the genre of the movie? Lastly, we asked whether or not the location is appropriate for the genre of the movie (horror). The answered summed up stated that it is definitely appropriate since houses bring a realistic/personal feeling to the viewer and therefore create the feeling of fear. It is also known that the effects of a horror movie can be easily displayed in a house (e.g. strange noises, footsteps, doors opening). Further more, horror movies have more of a realistic meaning to the viewer personally when it is set in a house.

Cinema audiences (Secondary research)

Types of films that have been popular for the past 3 years:

Top 10 movies that have been watched in 2013:

  1. Dispicable me = Genre: Comedy, animation, family.
  2. Mosters University = Genre: Comedy, animation, family.
  3. Now you see me = Genre: Crime, mystery, thriller.
  4. Pacific Rim = Genre: Action, sci-fi, adventure.
  5. The Wolverine = Genre: Action, adventure, fantasy.
  6. The World’s End = Genre: Action, comedy, sci-fi.
  7. World War Z = Genre: Action, adventure, horror.

Top 3movies watched in 2012: 1. Mission: Impossible- Ghost = Genre: Action, thriller 2. War Horse = Genre: Drama 3. Sherlock Holmes = Genre: Action, adventure, crime. Top 3 movies watched in 2011: 1. The King’s Speech = Genre: Biography, drama, history 2. Little Fockers = Genre: Comedy 3. Gulliver’s Travels = Genre: Adventure, comedy, family. Out of the analysis we see above we can conclude that the genre most people watched included action, adventure and comedy throughout the three years. Age that made the most visits to the cinema are cinemagoers who are young and upmarket (the table below provides us with evidence): hvty_edited What cinema is more popular among males and females? gender_edited 1 What class background a cinema audience is most likely to belong to? Untitled class_edited 11 What type of cinema a particular audience member is likely to go to? 3_edited idiii_edited   familyy gvcgcgvjh 10-15’s are more likely to go to a Cinema-goers because they are young and updated as the graph indicates that nowadays you are as likely to pop to your local cinema to watch a heartfelt documentary, an intriguing indie-film or even live opera as you are to see a big 3D family film or action flick. Art house is usually focused on cinemagoers that are older therefore 20+.

Target Audience research for horror movies (by Meltem Ozmen):

We have gathered 3 different comparable profiles found on the Pearl and Dean website for the specific movie genre of horror. By looking at these we can gain an idea of which type of genders/age groups are most interested in horror films. media1

In this particular table for The Purge, we can see that the largest % of viewers fall under the age group of 15-24 and both females and males seem to show a similar % although males seem to show 10% more interest in horror films. media2

An additional horror film we have looked at is The Haunting in Connecticut, here we can see that once again the majority of viewers are between the ages of 15-24 (56%) And a final film we looked at was Insidious media2

By looking at these comparable profiles we have come to the conclusion that the main target audience for our opening sequence would be 15-24 year olds as they seem to be the main age group which watch horror films. By knowing this we can alter our opening sequence according to their expectations of a horror movie in order to gain as much attention/interest as we can from them. For example 15-24 year olds who are mainly in the gender category of males will prefer to see more bloody scenes/action/fast paced scenes.

Evaluation of the research carried out and the application to our production:

All the research done by every single individual in our group has helped us to see what different elements and strategies we can use when filming our own opening sequence. Starting from the analysis of 3 different movie opening sequences we can all apply the use of camera shots and what kind of shots are used most of the time in horror movies to create the fear that people enjoy feeling. We can also consider different sounds used that created the feeling of suspense as well as editing techniques and props used. The way that key characters were introduced and what type of dialogue creates fear/interest in the movie or whether or not dialogue should not take place and therefore should create a mystery for the audience to solve. All these different analysis gave us as a group the information we needed to understand what we should consider when filming our film. For example, looking at all 15 analysis we can conclude that to start our opening sequence we should introduce our key location (where the movie will take place) this may be done by using a variety of shots and editing techniques for example wide shot/ master shot, establishing shots, transitions such as wipe and fade-in or fade out. Key characters were usually introduced using close ups and medium shots some were over the shoulder (the woman in black) as well as two shots. The monster or paranormal that creates fear and is the very main character is either represented with a very fast pace in the scenes therefore it is hard to realize what it actually is, or very slow pace takes place to create an enormous amount of suspense and fear. Furthermore, both, fast and slow pacing may be used in different occasions depending on the character and its intentions in the movie. From this we can choose and apply the ways in which our characters are going to be introduced in the opening sequence. As well as decide on what type of paces where in the scenes it would be appropriate for us to use. Opening sequence research includes sound as well, which was seen to be slow and creepy to create a scary atmosphere in which horrible action will take place. We have lots of information that we can apply from our analysis to make our opening sequence as professional as we can. We most definitely gained a lot of knowledge of where the use of particular sounds, camera shots, props and edits should be used to establish the genre of our movie, key locations, characters and general mood of the movie. Primary research (focus group questions) allowed us to ask people what types of movies they like, what scares them the most, what they expect in an opening sequence etc. All leading to additional research and information for us to apply to our opening sequence. From particular questions asked and the answers received, we can conclude that suspense is the attraction in horror movies. Therefore, we will try our hardest to include scenes that produce a feeling of suspense to the audience. We’ve also discovered that people do not like to discover the whole story line in an opening sequence. We can use this to make sure that our opening sequence does not provide the audience with the whole story line. Additional questions included people stating that horror movies mostly make them scared. Therefore, we will try to include scenes that frighten and scare our audience. All this information gained, will help us to decide on what to include in our opening sequence to fulfil our audiences needs and their answers will be used to make our product better. We have also asked our participants to answer five additional opened questions that were based on the opening sequence of ‘Insidious’ to gain additional information that will help us when we film our own. When summing up, the answers about particular music used participants stated that they expect creepy and slow music, for example childhood songs that may be quite at the beginning but their volume increases slowly. This helps us as a group to decide and base our knowledge on the research that we did when deciding what music should be used where in particular scenes. We have also established what our participants (interested in horror movies) expect in the movie/ opening sequence. They stated their ideas which included paranormal activity taking place, dull atmosphere, ghosts, creepy music etc. This leads us to an understanding on what we may include in our opening sequence to produce an interesting product that would interest our audience. Other questions included questions based on the video shown for example: do you think the opening scenes represented the horror movie well enough, whether the actors and location were appropriate. From these answers we can have a look at the video and decide what the participants liked and what interested them. After, we are able to use the information and apply it to our own product which is very useful.

    • Produce a paper edit:media edit decision list_edited
    • Make decisions about the titling that will be used- Opening sequences have been used to analyse the titles and their appearance in horror movies, from which I have gained knowledge and applied it to my opening sequence.
    • Use Final Cut to edit the film footage following the edit decision list:
(instead of final cut, I have used movie maker to produce my product)movie maker to edit_edited
    • Add the soundtrack to the film footage(Soundtrack was added by composing sound on musicJam and exporting it as an mp3. Once exported the sound was inserted in the movie maker)
    • Use Motion to produce titling for the film.

MOTION

  • Post explanations of the edit process on the group’s Blog page.(The process is posted below.)
  • Post the final edit on the group’s Blog Page:
(The work is posted at the very top of the blog page)I have done some useful research regards using final cut. I have included screen shots of what I have done and how it will help me when editing my group’s filmed footage.
  • Screen shot 2014-01-22 at 14.15.33
  • This is a screen shot of the browser. It shows all the sequences of the footage uploaded once we upload it on the computer and into final cut. This is making sure that I know where the footage will be once it is uploaded and how I should use it from there onwards.

  • This is the timeline in final cut where we can cut and edit parts of the footage to cut out scenes that we do not need for example. Sound is also placed above the the footage where we can fade it in or out for example.Screen shot 2014-01-22 at 14.36.42
  • This is the effects tab that I will be using to edit my footage for example to add dissolving effects in to the video I will most certainly need the effects tab.Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 14.39.27
  • you left click the mouse and choose ‘show audio waveforms’ for sound to appear on the timeline.Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 14.41.52
  • By choosing ‘pen’ on the tool bar you are able to control the levels of the sound may make them higher or lower. You are also able to fade the sounds in and out. This is also an example of a fade in and at the end it slowly starts to fade out until no sound is heard.

MOTION

The second programme that I used for my research was Motion. I will also use this programme to produce titles and text that I will include in our groups video that we shot together. I took some screen shots of the main tabs and effects that I will use and explained what they do.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 14.52.03

When you go to motion by clicking the right button on the mouse and choosing ‘project properties’ you are able to choose the preset you want your project to be based on as well as the background colour, if you keep the background ‘solid’ this means it will stay there when you export. All-together, you are able to manage the basis of your work/project by starting with the ‘project properties’

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 15.02.18

This is what comes up when you press ‘library’ it includes many shapes, filters, text styles that you can include and apply when making your text.

Screen shot 2014-01-22 at 14.33.45

I have inserted a ‘corona’ by going to ‘particle emitters’ followed by ‘pyro’ and a mini inspector comes up called HUD (Heads up display) where you can control couple settings based on the corona that I have inserted. For wider information and details to be controled you can use the ‘inspector’ which is located  right next to library tab on the very left corner.

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 15.18.46

The inspector includes ‘properties’, ‘behaviours’, ‘filters’, and ’emitters’ which lead to deeper control of the canvas that I have inserted in to motion, for example shape and glow.Behaviours may be applied on behalf of the canvas movement, shape, appearance, text for example.

filter

Filter in motion allows you to add many details to your footage as well as canvas, you can sort out the colour contrast in pictures/videos as well as add blur, borders and glow for example. this is useful when editing important parts to make your product perfect. To export your video you have to click on ‘file’, ‘options’ and choose your options to where you want t o save your product and what you want to call it.

Post explanations of the edit process on the group’s Blog page.

My produced video:

I’ve practiced some of the skills that may be useful for my groups video and produced a short video just to see how my work is going and what I should look out for to improve my skills as editor.

Decided to practice on my titles and gain some useful ideas. This is what I have done so far.

( Practice only)

I’ve practiced in motion on my titling techniques and produced this product:

This is the very beginning of my editing:

I have used music maker jam to make my music that I have used for my editing piece: evidence music maker

My second attempt to the editing, I have added some sound:

Made changes to my editing. Showing what I include as I go along:

Practiced with creating titles on motion for my openning sequence:

Titles of the director:

Title of the movie :

The background of where my actors names will be placed:

Ive started creating the titles and introducing main actors as well as the director by using motion.

These are the few techniques I came up with above that allowed me to improve my main openning sequence. I also included the video put together with the titles created and a new music that I composed in the background, due to recieving some critisms about the previous music being too happy perhaps and not creating the right atmosphere within the video and its purpose ( which is to cause tention and scare people).

Mise-en-scene: Elyas and Erika

Tasks I will complete:

  • Decide on all of the mise-en-scene aspects to be used in the opening sequence – this will include: costume, props, location, lighting, actors, actors movement, actors make-up
  • Present the mise-en-scene plans to their group for feedback.
  • Produce the shooting script.
  • Post the mise-en-scene paperwork on the group’s Blog page.
  • Arrange and book the actors needed for the shoot.
  • Decide what equipment is needed for the shoot and ensure that it is booked for when it is needed.
  • Ensure that all mise-en-scene material to be used in the opening sequence film shoot is present for the shoot.
  • Produce an explanation of the mise-en-scene process during the shoot.

Mise-en-scene by Erika Guzman:

mise-en-scene:

Sound – Shianne:

Tasks I will complete:

    • Make decisions about all of the sounds that will be used in the opening sequence.
    • Produce the script.
    • Present the script to their group for feedback.
    • Record all of the sound effects to be used in the opening sequence.
    • Create the music track using Garage Band for the opening sequence.
    • Load the sound planning paperwork onto the group’s Blog page.
    • Record all of the sound during the group’s production shoot.
    • Produce an explanation of the sound production progress during the shoot.

Plan for my sound in the piece

1.  Throughout  the opening sequence I will record a voice over  on and edie roll and and slow it down in order to make it fit the timing of the mental women telling her traumatizing story .

2. I will  create a wind effect to use in the background of house scenes.

3. The lines spoken  in between the voice over will be quotes from Victorian era.

4.I will make music on garage band to use in moments there is no voice over in hope of building suspense or a certain ambiance within this opening sequence.

  1. From first appearance there appears to be a lot of good work being done, however there are some changes that will need to be made:

    FOR THE GROUP

The sign posting throughout will need to be worked on in order to make it clear where everything is, increasing font size and thickness would certainly help; you should at least have headings for the major sections.
The questionnaire results need to be completed and better presented with an explanation for each question asked; this is the same for the focus group survey and the cinema audience survey.
There will need to be an explanation of how the product and audience research has changed your initial ideas.

    FOR THE INDIVIDUAL GROUP MEMBERS
Shiane it is good that you have looked at three films but you will have to make it clear that you have looked at camera shots, mise-en-scene, sound and editing. You will have to make some changes to the Wolf Creek embedded video.
Demmie your film analysis is really looking good but you’ll need to do a third video, also please make sure that you pay attention to detail.
Meltem it is good that you have looked at three films in your analysis but you will have to complete these in the manner agreed, which will mean that you’ll have to comment on camera shots, mise-en-scene, sound. You’ll also have to make changes to your last video which isn’t playing.
Erika and Elyasse you should have done your opening sequence analysis by now so can you post your work asap.

  2. Shianne: I have changed the clip for wolf creek to a clip which is shorter and shows all the aspects which I comment about in my analysis.

I have also headed the focus group questions so that each is clearly stated before the feedback is displayed.

  3. Shianne: I have also now started to improve the layout of my analysis to make it clear to you whether I am talking about at which points and so that not all my point merge together further more I will also begin to explain how the analysis changes my initial ideas about filming.this will be completed by next friday

  4. Meltem: I have changed the halloween opening sequence clip, it is now working. Also I have started to modify the layout of my analysis in order to make the aspects of camerawork etc clearer. I will aim to complete this by 24/01/14.

  5. Deimante: I have analysed the questionnaire graphs identifying what information they provide us with. I have also included screen shots for my third video since it cannot be found on youtube anymore and I am about to evaluate all the research and evaluate how it applies and helps with the initial thinking of our opening sequence that we want to film.

  6. This is Elyasses analysis: for the horror/thriller Psyco film(Mise-en-scene: Lighting, costume, make up, props, actors/actors movement location)

Analyse the opening sequence in your film in order to establish how it has made use of mise-en-scene focusing on the following:

How it is made clear where the film is set.
At the beginning of the film there was a film they tell the audience that the film is set in Phoenix Arizona

How the time period of the film is made clear.
The film is in black and white therefore it shows that this film is a lot more older.

How ideas about the main characters are established
The characters are established as lovers, as they clearly had just made love in the what is seen as a hotel room

How the genre of the film is established.
The characters are established as lovers which can not be with each other because in the 1960s having a relationship was looked down up on, this may suggest that something may go wrong between them, this presents the films genre as a romantic film, but due to the eerie music and hotel room also suggests that it is also a horror.

  7. Elyasse’s analysis of the sound in the horror/thriller film Psycho:Analyse the opening sequence in your film in order to establish how it has made use of sound focusing on the following:

How is dialogue used to create ideas about the films key characters?
The dialogue when the two characters are talking about how it is wrong for them to make love, presents that the two characters have a hidden relationship

What sorts of sounds are used to create ideas about key locations?
The slight sound of cars and traffic behind the opening music may suggest that it is set in a busy city

How is sound used to establish ideas about the films genre?

Instantly the film is introduced with a fast paced and dissonant is playing which creates tension suggesting that it is a horror film

How is sound used to establish ideas about the general mood of the film?
The harsh slow pace music makes the audience feel that there is something wrong in this scene this may be carried out throughout the film

  8. Elyasse’s analysis of the sound in the film Psycho:Analyse the opening sequence in your film in order to establish how it has made use of camera shots focusing on the following:

    How key locations are introduced?
The first scene of the film starts of with a establishing shot, of city buildings and gives the audience an idea of the location of the film. Also it say the location, which is Phoenix Arizona.

    How key characters are introduced?
The first characters are introduced through a medium shot, introducing them as if they just made love.

How the relationships between key characters are established?
As the characters are presented as they had made love their relationship is established as lovers.

How ideas about the films genre is established?
The first scene is introduced with a establishing shot, which then slowly creeps into the bedroom where the characters are base at the moment this may suggest that these characters

    Mise-en-scene costume:
First scene; The two actors will be presented as young through wearing youthful clothing for example, the male character will be wearing a hoodie, jeans and trainers and the female character would be wearing a short skirt, baseball jacket and trainers. Whereas in the second scene and the characters are older, they will be presented in this way by wearing a more formal costume such as shirts, trousers and shoes.
